Tunisia prolongs state of emergency for an additional month

President Kais Saied Wednesday extended for one month the state of emergency in place since November 2015 after a suicide attack killed a dozen of forces from the presidential guard.
The office of the President said the measure is starting as of April 30.

The state of emergency, in place since late November 2015, has been extended multiple times, the latest was in late January for three months.

The state of emergency grants the ministry of interior sweeping powers including banning meetings, imposing curfews, shop inspections during the day and at night, as well as monitoring the press, publications, radio broadcasts, movies and theatrical performances, without the need to obtain prior permission from the judiciary.

Right groups this year called on President Saied to lift the measure arguing that hundreds of people have seen their rights violated by security forces.
