Football/Africa: CAF Secretary General Mouad Hajji throws in the towel

Mouad Hajji Monday stepped down from his position of Secretary General of the African football governing body, CAF, less than one year after taking over from Egyptian Amr Fathy.

The Moroccan national said he was stepping down on personal grounds. He thanked CAF boss Ahmad Ahmad for the opportunity that was given to him in April last year.

“I would like to warmly thank President Ahmad Ahmad for giving me the opportunity to serve the football of our continent at such a level of responsibility,” Hajji said in a statement.

“I have no doubt that the President will continue to work for the good development of the most beautiful sport possible,” he added.

The Moroccan was handpicked by Ahmad to replace fired Fathy who accused the President of corruption.

Fathy’s accusations were upheld by Pricewaterhouse Coopers audit, which urged FIFA, the world football governing body, to investigate the organization and its leader over illicit money transactions.

The Cairo-based body has denied any wrongdoing.
