Airports: Morocco Eyes 60 Million Passengers by 2025

Morocco has 18 international airports which welcomed in 2019 over 25 million passengers. They are currently capable of handling 40 million travelers.

In order to avoid their congestion due to the growing number of tourists visiting the North African kingdom and continuous opening of routes by the airliners, Morocco’s Airport Authority (ONDA) intends to build new terminals over the five coming years in the country’s major cities.

According to local news reports, l’Office National des Aéroports is planning a third terminal in the Mohammed V airport of Casablanca, the largest airport in the Kingdom, to boost its capacity to 23 million passengers before 2025 from the 10 millions served in 2019.

In Marrakech, a second airport will also be constructed to alleviate the pressure exerted on Marrakech-Menara airport, which processed last year 6 million travelers.

It operates close to its capacity, posting an outstanding 14.6 pc annual growth.

In the Atlantic coastal city of Agadir, the Al Massira airport saw in 2019 over 2 million travelers passing through its doors. As the number of its passengers is growing 3 pc annually in upward trend, this airport will be expanded to take up its capacity to 7 million passengers.

In December, the new terminal of Morocco’s capital city of Rabat celebrated its one-millionth passenger. It is capable of handling up to two million travelers. To keep up with growth projections, ONDA launched the construction of another terminal to increase its capacity to 6 million travelers in the two coming years.
