Somaport Marks 20 Years of Contribution to Morocco’s Port Development

Port operator Somaport marked its 20th anniversary in Casablanca on Saturday, “marking two decades of an industrial and human adventure closely tied to the modernisation of Morocco’s port sector,” the operator said in a statement. Born of the 2006 port reform, the company held a ceremony in partnership with the Union marocaine du travail (UMT) that brought together employees, former staff, partners and institutional figures.

The statement traces its history: its start in 2006, its link to CMA-CGM in 2007, the start of operations at the port of Casablanca in 2009, its integration into the Terminal Link network in 2012, and major developments between 2018 and 2023 that deepened its nautical infrastructure, described as “a structuring step”.

Somaport now operates two complementary terminals: a container terminal with an annual capacity of 450,000 TEU, and a multipurpose terminal handling 2 million tons a year, mainly general cargo and exceptional loads. In 2024 it completed work to reinforce and deepen quays, commissioned a new STS quay crane and acquired five hybrid RTG yard cranes. It handled more than 480,000 TEU in 2025.

The celebration, held under the slogan “20 years of history, a collective success”, stressed the human factor. Managing director Jérôme Bodet said each milestone “bears the imprint of those who have contributed to making SOMAPORT what it is today”, and that the task now is to build on this heritage to continue its transformation.

Bodet said Somaport aims to strengthen its performance through new investments, equipment modernization and staff training, while taking part in royal projects to improve the competitiveness of the port of Casablanca.
