Morocco ranks among the most competitive manufacturing bases for clean technologies on the southern shore of the Mediterranean, according to a new industrial mapping released by the European Commission’s directorate for the MENA region.
The recently published report assesses the capabilities of six countries in solar, wind, batteries and hydrogen.
It identifies Morocco and Egypt as the two strongest Euro-Mediterranean manufacturing platforms, citing established industrial bases, logistics advantages and proximity to European markets.
Morocco benefits from its geographic closeness to Europe, proactive industrial ecosystem policies and world-class infrastructure such as the Tanger Med port complex.
The country already produces transformers, electrical equipment, cables and solar water heaters.
Momentum is particularly strong in the battery and electric-vehicle ecosystem. Leveraging its vast phosphate reserves, Morocco is positioning itself in the lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery materials supply chain while preparing for future green ammonia and green hydrogen developments.
The mature automotive and aerospace sectors provide transferable skills, supplier networks and experience meeting international standards, facilitating the shift into clean-tech manufacturing.
Green hydrogen is emerging as a new pillar of the national industrial strategy, supported by a dedicated regulatory framework that has attracted foreign partners.
European experts also highlight Morocco’s overall business climate, underpinned by political stability, effective investment promotion agencies and openness to international markets.
The report notes that several clean-tech manufacturing segments remain at an early stage. Morocco continues to depend on imports for a wide range of components.
Administrative bottlenecks, including lengthy permit and approval procedures, and delays in operationalizing certain support programs are flagged as constraints.
