Moroccan foreign minister Nasser Bourita said on Tuesday in New York that the Sahara issue has reached a watershed moment thanks to the momentum spurred by King Mohammed VI.
Bourita, who delivered Morocco’s statement at 81st session of UN General Assembly, has cited in this regard the historic resolution 2797 adopted by UN Security Council in October 2025, saying this resolution has placed the Sahara issue in irreversible path, representing a major step forward to end this regional conflict.
The latest UNSC resolution on the Sahara was crystal-clear, leaving no room for interpretation, said the minister, noting that some have tried to no avail to deliberately twist the resolutions wording in a blatant denial of reality and a complete refusal to acknowledge an established truth.
The minister has reaffirmed that there is no solution to the Sahara issue outside the framework of autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty. “There is no other approach or mechanism outside the UN-led political process based exclusively on the autonomy initiative,” said Mr. Bourita.
There can be no discussion or dispute over the responsibility and obligations of the four parties to the conflict as clearly defined by Security Council Resolution 2797, added the minister, stressing that the status quo preferred by the other parties cannot be allowed to persist as the political solution process is already underway.
He also said that time has come to end the sufferings of the populations held hostage in Tindouf camps for half a century in blatant violation of international law and international humanitarian law.
The minister reiterated Morocco’s firm commitment to a lasting solution to this regional dispute, while accelerating inclusive socioeconomic development in its southern provinces.
Furthermore, the inhabitants of the Sahara region, he said, will fulfil their national and political duty by taking part, as they had always done, in the legislative elections of September 23, contributing actively to advancing local democracy.
