U.S. Congressman Joe Wilson has commended the role played by Morocco, under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, in fostering peace and stability in Africa.
The Republican representative of South Carolina made the remarks following a meeting he held Monday in New York with Moroccan foreign minister Nasser Bourita on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
He hailed the leadership of President Donald Trump in America’s recognition of Morocco’s full sovereignty over its entire Saharan territory, affirming that regional peace, stability, and prosperity hinges on the Kingdom’s sovereignty over its Southern Provinces.
“The whole concept of peace, stability and prosperity rests on Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara,” he said, lauding the momentum in U.S.-Morocco relations, under the leadership of King Mohammed VI and President Donald Trump.
In a tweet posted on his X account, the Congressman said he discussed with Bourita “the strong and enduring friendship of our two countries, Moroccan sovereignty over the Western Sahara, and the need to designate the Polisario Front a terrorist organization.”
Joe Wilson is the lead sponsor of a bipartisan bill submitted to the House of Representatives for designating the Polisario as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO). H.R. 4119- the Polisario Front Designation Act, has gained the support of several Republican and Democrat congressmen.
The meeting between Bourita and Wilson comes ahead of the October UN Security Council meeting on Sahara expected to take pivotal decisions on the MINURSO and this regional conflict.
