Bubista has resigned from his post as Cape Verde head coach to take charge of Moroccan RS Berkane club.
Bubista, 56, leaves after a successful six-and-a-half-year tenure during which he guided Cape Verde to their first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance. The Blue Sharks reached the last 32 of the 2026 World Cup before losing 3-2 to eventual runners-up Argentina after extra time.
He also led Cape Verde to the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after taking charge in January 2020. He has signed a two-year contract with RS Berkane, replacing Moin Chaabani, who has been appointed Tunisia’s head coach.
The Cape Verde Football Federation praised Bubista for his dedication, professionalism and contribution to the development of the national team.
Meanwhile, Côte ed’Ivoire has brought back French coach Herve Renard after deciding not to renew Emerse Fae’s contract. Renard previously guided the Elephants to the Africa Cup of Nations title in 2015.
The 57-year-old has won the Afcon twice as a coach, having also led Zambia to a surprise triumph in 2012. Since leaving Côte D’Ivoire in 2015, he has managed Morocco, Saudi Arabia and also France’s women’s national team.
Renard’s return follows Côte ed’Ivoire’s exit from the 2026 World Cup after a 2-1 defeat to Norway in the last 32. He is expected to arrive in Abidjan in the coming days to begin his new assignment.
Bubista’s departure is the latest coaching change among African teams that featured at the 2026 World Cup, following exits by Algeria’s Vladimir Petkovic, South Africa’s Hugo Broos and Senegal’s Pape Thiaw. Tunisia has also appointed Moin Chaabani, while Ghana continues discussions over the future of coach Carlos Queiroz after the Black Stars’ elimination.
