European Investment Bank Targets €700 Million Financing in Morocco during 2026

The European Investment Bank (EIB) Group plans to channel more than €700 million into Morocco during 2026, according to EIB Group President Nadia Calviño, who made the announcement during her first official visit to the kingdom since taking up the role.

Calviño noted that the partnership between the EIB and Morocco has accelerated markedly in recent years, with the bank tripling its financing in the country over the past five years. The €700 million target for 2026 represents a continuation of that upward trajectory.

Since beginning operations in Morocco in 1979, the EIB has invested more than €12 billion across sectors including energy security, innovation, and education. Calviño pointed to flagship projects financed by the bank, among them the Tanger Med port, the Ouarzazate solar complex, the Euro-Mediterranean University of Fez, and the Medusa submarine fiber-optic cable, as illustrations of the depth of the partnership.

She added that the bank’s current focus areas align closely with Morocco’s own development priorities, including building more resilient infrastructure through transport network modernization, supporting the private sector, and expanding access to education, particularly for girls in rural areas. The EIB’s capacity to combine loans, technical assistance, and European instruments such as grants and guarantees, she said, allows it to translate policy ambitions into concrete projects benefiting citizens and businesses directly.

Calviño also revealed that the EIB will take over the presidency of the multilateral development banks in 2027, a role she said would allow the institution to highlight the value of mutually beneficial partnerships such as the one built with Morocco. Looking ahead, she said the goal is to deepen cooperation across energy transition, industrial competitiveness, private-sector support, and economic integration with Europe.
