AU-PSC: Morocco Reiterates Firm Commitment to Political Solution in Libya

Morocco reiterated on Tuesday before the African Union Peace and Security Council (AU PSC) its firm commitment to a political solution in Libya.

Speaking at an AU PSC meeting on Libya, Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Mohamed Arrouchi, reaffirmed the Kingdom’s unwavering support for national reconciliation efforts and inter-Libyan dialogue initiatives. These efforts, he noted, aim to enshrine achieved progress and foster a consensus among Libyan parties.

The diplomat emphasized that the Skhirat Agreement, signed on December 17, 2015, under United Nations auspices as the outcome of the reconciliation process between Libyan parties, remains a highly credible foundation and framework for a lasting political solution to the Libyan crisis. He called for safeguarding Libya’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity as a vital prerequisite for long-term stability.

He further conveyed the Moroccan delegation’s appreciation for the continuous and sustained efforts deployed by the AU to advance peace, security, and stability across the continent, particularly those aimed at fostering a political resolution to the Libyan crisis.

Arrouchi also recalled the meetings held in Tripoli and Zintan, which ultimately led to signing an agreement between representatives of the Government of National Unity and the eastern-based government in the Libyan capital on January 7, 2026.

The Ambassador likewise highlighted Morocco’s longstanding role in supporting the political process in Libya, through its efforts to bridge viewpoints among the various Libyan stakeholders, who place their trust in the Kingdom’s role.

He added that these efforts are conducted in line with international law, the conclusions of the Skhirat Agreement, and the Bouznika understandings, with the aim of fostering a Libyan-led solution acceptable to all parties. To this end, Arrouchi stressed that Morocco underscores the imperative of furthering diplomatic efforts toward a political resolution of the crisis, away from military options.
