Morocco leads Africa in advanced military drone capabilities- report

Morocco is emerging as a key drone power in Africa, topping the continent in high-end unmanned systems, according to Military Africa Magazine.

The publication, which tracked 234 acquisition programs across 34 African countries between 1980 and 2026, shows that Morocco now operates 279 drones, placing it second continent-wide in overall fleet size behind Egypt (313 units). Nigeria, Ethiopia and Algeria follow at a distance.

However, Morocco takes the lead in the most strategic category: armed MALE and HALE drones. The Kingdom operates 102 of these high-end platforms. In this category, it performs by far Egypt (92) and Algeria (86). This made Rabat Africa’s top player in advanced unmanned aerial capabilities, according to Military Africa Magazine.

These systems, designed for long-endurance surveillance and strike missions, are now considered the backbone of modern airpower, highlighting Morocco’s focus on quality and operational capability rather than volume.

The report also points to Morocco’s strong procurement ties with Israel. Out of 325 Israeli drones delivered across Africa, 176 were acquired by Morocco, giving it an unparalleled level of integration of Israeli technology on the continent.

Across Africa, drone acquisitions have accelerated sharply, with more than half of all units recorded between 2020 and 2026. While countries such as Egypt emphasize fleet size and others like Nigeria diversify suppliers, Morocco stands out for its concentration of sophisticated systems.
