AFCON 2025 Final Incidents: CAF President Expresses Gratitude to King Mohammed VI for Royal pardon to Senegalese Fans

CAF President Patrice Motsepe has expressed his deep gratitude to King Mohammed VI for granting his royal pardon to the Senegalese supporters convicted of offences relating to the Final Match of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025.

In a statement posted on the CAF website Saturday, Patrice Motsepe said: “On behalf of the CAF Member Associations who represent 54 African countries, I would like to express our deep gratitude to His Majesty King Mohammed VI, for granting His Royal Pardon to the Senegalese supporters convicted of offences relating to the Final Match of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025.”

CAF has consistently emphasized its commitment to utilize football to contribute to uniting African people from different racial, ethnic and religious backgrounds. The pardon by King Mohammed VI, is an uplifting and motivating illustration of the power of football to unite and bring people together in Africa and worldwide, CAF Chief pointed.

“I was amazed and impressed when I was briefed about the historic and extensive ties between the people of Senegal and Morocco, when I visited these two countries a few weeks ago. CAF wishes Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, Ghana, South Africa, Côte d’Ivoire, Cape Verde and the Democratic Republic of Congo, everything of the very best during the FIFA World Cup 2026. We are confident that they will make Africa proud,” he stated further.

King Mohammed VI has pardoned a group of Senegalese football supporters convicted of serious offenses committed during the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations hosted by the Kingdom.

The announcement came in a statement issued Saturday by the Royal Office, saying the Monarch’s pardon has been granted on humanitarian grounds and on the occasion of Eid Al Adha in harmony with the long-standing fraternal relations existing between the two countries.

The royal move “attests to the depth of the strong bonds of friendship, fraternity and cooperation uniting the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Senegal”, said the Royal Office statement

This Pardon further reflects the enduring cardinal values underpinning the Moroccan identity, foremost among them clemency, benevolence, generosity and the spirit of tolerance, added the statement.

immediately after the announcement, President of Senegal Bassirou Diomaye Faye expressed his “sincerest thanks” to the Moroccan King for the Pardon granted to Senegalese fans.

“I extend to His Majesty my sincerest thanks for this decision marked by clemency and humanity,” said the Senegalese President, stressing that Senegal and Morocco have long cultivated a fraternal relationship.
