Defense: Morocco to Strengthen Its Deterrence Capabilities with Advanced Unmanned Ground Vehicle

Morocco is reportedly in discussions with Turkish defense firm Havelsan to acquire “Barkan 3”, an advanced unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) designed to operate in conjunction with drones in monitoring and addressing threats remotely.

According to press reports, Morocco is expanding its military cooperation with Turkish companies building on the success of the drone factory opened in the country by Baykar.

The new Turkish UGV is a remote-controlled weapons systems. Designed for AI-enabled “digital troop” combat, it features a 1,000 kg chassis, increased mobility (25 kmph max speed), a 5-hour operation capacity, and enhanced sensors (LIDAR, radar) for autonomous driving.

The Barkan 3 can be equipped with a 12.7 mm Remote Controlled Weapon Station (RCWS) or KARAOK anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs). It supports both all-electric or hybrid configurations with improved ground clearance and can carry heavier weapons than its predecessors. It is also equipped TUALCOM anti-jam antennas and Non-Line-of-Sight (NLOS) operation capabilities.

The deployment of Barkan 3 reduces servicemen exposure in high-risk and complex combat scenarios.
