Sudan army chief rejects negotiations, vows continued offensive against RSF

Sudan’s army chief, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, on Wednesday, April 29, affirmed his refusal to negotiate with the Rapid Support Forces, pledging to sustain military operations until the country is fully secured.

The conflict, ongoing since April 2023, has severely worsened humanitarian and security conditions across Sudan, with diplomatic efforts to reach a political settlement remaining stalled. Addressing a military ceremony, Burhan praised the armed forces and allied fighters in what he described as the “Battle of Dignity,” insisting the military would press on to meet its objectives.

Senior officials echoed this stance, with Yasser al-Atta vowing continued offensives until “complete victory,” including operations extending to Um Dafuq and Blue Nile. Defence Minister Hassan Daoud Kabroun said the Security and Defence Council had reviewed operational readiness and taken measures to safeguard national sovereignty.

Fighting has increasingly shifted from Khartoum and central regions towards Greater Kordofan and parts of Blue Nile, as the army seeks to advance westwards towards Darfur, much of which remains under RSF control.
