The government of the Canary Islands aligns with Spain’s official position, supporting Morocco’s autonomy plan as the most serious, realistic and credible basis for resolving the Sahara dispute, Canary Islands President Fernando Clavijo said.
This position was expressed during a press briefing held on Monday in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria with the President of the Souss-Massa Regional Council, Karim Achengli, who is visiting Las Palmas at the head of a delegation of institutional and economic stakeholders from the region.
The Canary Islands’ stand follows the position adopted by Spain after the 13th High-Level Meeting, which welcomed United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, emphasizing that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is one of the most feasible solutions to resolve this issue.
“We are part of Spain and, of course, we fully adhere to the decisions taken by our government. We fully share and respect this agreement,” he said.
President Fernando Clavijo recalled his three visits to Morocco during his term and stressed the importance of consolidating cooperation relations with the Kingdom.
Several trade missions have been organized in this context to strengthen exchanges and capitalize on opportunities in various sectors, notably blue economy, tourism, academic exchanges, and water management, he added.
