Atlas Lions star Ounahi nears transfer to Manchester City

Speculation over a potential transfer of Morocco international midfielder Azzedine Ounahi from Girona to Manchester City has intensified in recent days, following reports that the Spanish club is actively pushing for a move within the Manchester City Football Group.

French football website Foot Mercato reported on April 25 that Girona has proposed Ounahi to the Premier League champions, arguing that a transfer could be facilitated by the fact both clubs belong to the City Football Group and that the player’s release clause is set at around 20 million euros.

“According to our information, it is Girona who would like to sell the player to the English club,” Foot Mercato said, comparing the situation to the transfer of Savinho to Manchester City in the summer of 2024.

The Spanish club is reported to see Ounahi’s sale as a way to strengthen its finances while capitalising on the midfielder’s rising market value.

The report added that Manchester City could be in the market for midfield reinforcements this summer and that Girona considers the English club a natural destination given its financial capacity and shared ownership structure.

Ounahi, 24, joined Girona during the last summer transfer window after a spell at Panathinaïkos, where he had been on loan from Olympique de Marseille in a deal valued at around 6 million euros.

Since his arrival in Catalonia, the Moroccan has established himself as a key figure in Girona’s midfield, contributing with consistent performances that have drawn attention across Europe.

His displays have reinforced his reputation as one of Morocco’s most technically gifted midfielders, a status he first cemented during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he played a crucial role as Morocco reached the semi‑finals, the best performance by an African side at the tournament.
