Moroccan football federation denies parting ways with coach Regragui

Morocco’s football federation denied media reports that Atlas Lions coach Walid Regragui had terminated his contract, saying he remains in charge of the national squad.

The one-sentence statement followed a flurry of reports led by local outlet Le360 Sport claiming Regragui and the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) had agreed to a mutual termination, with an official announcement imminent. Several foreign media outlets echoed the story later.

“The Royal Moroccan Football Federation denies the information circulating regarding its separation with coach Mr. Walid Regragui,” the federation said in a brief note published late Tuesday.

Regragui, 50, was appointed in August 2022 and led Morocco to a historic World Cup semi-final in Qatar that year before finishing second at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on home soil.

Speculation over his future has intensified in recent weeks, with some Spanish and local media linking former Barcelona coach Xavi Hernández to the job. Other reports say Xavi is unlikely to take over before the 2026 World Cup. The FRMF has not commented on potential successors.

This denial is the second time this month the federation has pushed back on claims of Regragui’s exit.
