Morocco Activates Major High-Voltage Transmission Line Strengthening National Grid

Morocco’s National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water energized a new 400-kilovolt double-circuit transmission line connecting Sidi Bennour to Laâwamer, reinforcing the kingdom’s electrical infrastructure capacity and regional energy distribution.

Spanning 98 kilometers, the very high voltage line forms part of ONEE’s investment program strengthening and securing Morocco’s national electricity transmission network. The infrastructure aims to increase electrical energy transit between different kingdom regions while guaranteeing reliable and efficient power transmission across the country.

The project mobilized significant human and technical resources, requiring investment exceeding 184 million dirhams, according to ONEE’s statement. The energization represents continued development and modernization of the national electricity transmission network, supporting Morocco’s energy transition under optimal conditions.

Morocco faces growing electricity demand driven by economic expansion, population growth, and industrial development. The kingdom’s energy strategy emphasizes both renewable energy integration and transmission infrastructure enhancement to ensure grid stability and supply security. Very high voltage lines like the Sidi Bennour-Laâwamer connection enable efficient long-distance power transmission with minimal losses, critical for distributing electricity generated from renewable sources often located in remote areas.

The 400-kilovolt capacity represents state-of-the-art transmission technology, allowing substantial power volumes to move across regions. Double-circuit design provides redundancy, enhancing network reliability by maintaining partial operation even if one circuit experiences technical issues.
