Genz hold peaceful protests distancing itself from rioters

Dozens of young demonstrators gathered peacefully in a central district of Rabat and other cities, responding to a call by the GenZ 212 movement.

The protesters chanted slogans demanding improvements in healthcare, education, and stronger measures against corruption. Before dispersing, they thanked police officers for their restraint and presence.

Other protests in Casablanca and Agadir took place peacefully, As the GenZ 212 movement distances itself from the rioters.

The sit-ins were part of a broader campaign by GenZ 212, which had urged peaceful demonstrations across Morocco’s major cities while condemning recent riots that have shaken the country.

Morocco witnessed its worst unrest in a decade, with hundreds of security personnel injured and widespread damage to vehicles, banks, and shops.

In a statement, the government reiterated its willingness to engage in “frank dialogue” with peaceful demonstrators.

However, it also warned against violent actions. Three individuals died during an attempted assault on a Royal Gendarmerie station in Lqliaa, in the province of Inzegane Ait Melloul. Security forces initially used tear gas and warning shots, but rioters reportedly looted a vehicle, set part of the headquarters on fire, and injured five gendarmes.

Interior Ministry spokesperson emphasized the state’s commitment to upholding civil liberties, including the right to peaceful protest. “The right to demonstrate peacefully, guaranteed to all, does not exempt public authorities from intervening, when necessary,” El Khalfi said in a press briefing.

He added that the ministry would not hesitate to take legal action against individuals who resort to violence, vandalism, or incitement. “While public authorities are committed to protecting citizens’ safety, citizens must also respect the law and the freedoms of others,” he said.

The spokesman stressed that freedom and rights must be exercised within a framework of responsibility and civic duty, which serve the collective good.
