Sudanese military’s threat to target Chadian airports, a declaration of war, says Chad

Chad has issued a forceful condemnation of a senior Sudanese military official’s threat to target its airports, characterizing the statement as a “declaration of war” and promising to respond according to international law if its sovereignty faces violation.

The diplomatic crisis erupted after Lieutenant General Yasir al-Atta, deputy commander of Sudan’s army, designated airports in N’Djamena and Amdjarass as “legitimate targets,” alleging the facilities were used to transport weapons to the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group. Speaking at a military ceremony, al-Atta warned of “retaliatory action” against the UAE, South Sudan, and Chadian President Mahamat Déby.

Chad, which has positioned itself as neutral while hosting hundreds of thousands of Sudanese refugees, urged the general to “stop uttering foolish threats” and instead focus on negotiating a ceasefire and sustainable resolution to the devastating two-year civil war.

The escalating rhetorical confrontation underscores the growing regional instability as Sudan’s conflict threatens to spill across borders.

The dispute coincides with RSF claims of capturing al-Malha in Darfur, a strategically vital trade route junction. Local sources report the paramilitary group has imposed lockdowns, disrupted essential services, and targeted ethnic Zaghawa civilians associated with government-allied forces.

Military analysts suggest Sudan faces potential de facto partition as both warring factions consolidate territorial control, with the army gaining ground in central Sudan and Khartoum while RSF strengthens its position throughout Darfur despite recent setbacks.
