Algeria, Polisario a destabilizing factor in Northwest Africa – congressman

U.S. Representative from South Carolina Joe Wilson warned of the threat posed by the Algeria-backed Polisario to north and west African security amid growing ties with Iran and Cuba.

“Iranian regime and Cuban communist dictatorship are working to destabilize West Africa with the Polisario front, a murderous threat to the kingdom of Morocco, an American partner for 250 years,” Wilson told the Congress.

He warned of Algeria’s role in backing terrorist groups such as PKK, whose members have recently been invited to the Polisario’s rear-base in southwestern Algeria.

Wilson also highlighted the need to back Morocco defend its territorial integrity, recalling that the US has recognized the Sahara as Moroccan under the first term of President Trump.
