Sahara: Morocco’s King sends strong message to enemies of country’s territorial integrity
King Mohammed VI has sent a firm and straightforward message to the delusional and lunatic enemies of Morocco’s full sovereignty over its entire Sahara, telling them wake up to reality and cease pursuing an elusive dream for nearly five decades.
The Monarch’s firm stand over the Sahara issue comes in a speech he delivered Wednesday on the 49th anniversary of the Green March which coincides this year with the victory of Donald Trump in presidential election.
According to experts, the return of Trump to the White House is expected to strengthen further the Rabat-Washington axis as Mr. Trump recognized in 2020 the Moroccanness of the Sahara, spurring an international momentum in favor of the North African Kingdom.
Yet, “there are those who exploit the Sahara issue so as to secure access to the Atlantic Ocean”, or “to deflect attention from their many internal problems”, said the Moroccan sovereign in the Green March speech, apparently alluding to the Algerian regime which shelters, arms, and funds Polisario armed militia to serve its own geostrategic agenda.
In one of the most scathing messages to Algeria and its Polisario puppets for clinging to the obsolete referendum thesis, the Monarch dismissed this unrealistic option saying it has been abandoned by the United Nations due to its undoability and impracticability.
He also denounced the “deplorable conditions” of the “sequestered”, “humiliated”, and “mistreated” populations in the Tindouf camps, making Algeria and Polisario accountable for this humanitarian tragedy.
The Royal speech also sends a subtler message to the Algerian authoritarian regime which is seeking to gain access to the Atlantic Ocean since Boumediane era, saying Morocco has proposed an international initiative to facilitate the Sahel countries’ access to the Atlantic Ocean within the framework of solidarity-based south-south partnership and “win-win” cooperation for peace and stability in the region.
The Royal Sahel initiative is open to all countries of the region including Algeria to unleash the full economic potential of the region. But “Morocco’s partnerships and legal obligations will never be at the expense of its territorial integrity or its national sovereignty,” insisted the Monarch, making reference to the latest politically motivated ruling issued by the European Court of Justice on EU-Morocco fisheries and farming agreements.
The King called on the UN to shoulder its responsibility and decide between two visions: one “realistic and legitimate” spearheaded by Morocco, while the other is “disconnected from reality” and “frozen in time”.
The strength of Moroccan standing is based on historical ties between the Saharan population and the Alawite Throne, the steadfast attachment of Sahrawis to their Moroccan identity, tangible inclusive socioeconomic development, security, and stability in the southern provinces. These gained momentum with the growing international support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its Saharan territory and autonomy initiative offered by the Kingdom under its sovereignty.
The international community stands with Morocco’s just and legitimate cause, while the ruling Algerian junta, the main party to the Sahara regional issue, continues to export instability, threatening regional peace and stability by hosting an armed militia with ties to terrorist groups and Iranian proxies.
The latest clash between the U.S. and Algeria at the UN Security Council over the Sahara makes the Algerian Generals extremely nervous and unsettled. Their anxiety heightened as the return of Trump to the presidency will bolster Morocco’s regional influence as well as its economic and military power.
