Morocco’s presidency of HRC 57th session ends after adoption of 37 major resolutions
The 57th regular session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, held under the chairmanship of Morocco, concluded on Friday, oct.11.
The session was marked by the adoption of 37 resolutions—ten of which were voted on—and one decision. On the final day of the session, Ambassador Omar Zniber, Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the UN Office at Geneva and current President of the HRC, appointed four mandate-holders and four members of the council’s Advisory Committee.
The resolutions adopted relate to a number of themes, including the situation of migrants at international borders; the promotion and protection of human rights in the context of climate change; biodiversity and human rights; the right to development; the promotion, protection and fulfilment of human rights on the Internet; the transformation of the international financial architecture and a global solution to the problem of foreign debt; accessibility for people with disabilities, the elderly and others in vulnerable situations; the fight against racism and racial discrimination; and the intensification of efforts to prevent and eliminate domestic violence.
Other resolutions cover human rights and the social reintegration of persons released from detention or subjected to non-custodial measures; the role of young people in promoting peaceful societies and creating an environment conducive to the enjoyment of human rights by all; the effects of artificial intelligence systems on good governance; as well as the monitoring of mercenaries and mercenary-related activities, both online and offline; and the implementation of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy and its four pillars.
With regard to the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), the Council approved during this session the documents resulting from the review of fourteen countries: New Zealand, Afghanistan, Chile, Viet Nam, Uruguay, Yemen, Vanuatu, Northern Macedonia, Comoros, Slovakia, Eritrea, Cyprus, the Dominican Republic, and Cambodia.
Before concluding its proceedings, the Council adopted ad referendum the draft report of this fifty-seventh session held from September 9 to October 11 2024.
