Morocco: Instigators for illegal migration receive up to 10 months jail sentence

The judiciary has started examining the cases of 152 people accused of inciting to illegal migration, with 53 already receiving jail sentences varying from 3 months to 10 months.

On September 15, some 3000 would-be migrants attempted to cross into the Spanish-occupied enclave of Ceuta in response to calls for mass crossings on social media.

Algerian nationals were also among those who were brought before justice.

Some of the arrested instigators were on the ground during the migration attempts while others were identified based on their social media activity.

Charges also included partaking in an illegal migration attempt, disobeying orders by the police, and violence.

So far this year, Morocco foiled 45,000 migration attempts and last year it aborted 75,000 attempts.

Spain has repeatedly commended Morocco’s cooperation in fighting illegal migration.
