Sweden detects first case of highly infectious Mpox strain

Sweden has reported its first case of a more infectious form of mpox, originally identified in eastern Congo. This development comes just a day after the World Health Organization declared outbreaks in Africa a global emergency. The patient, who recently sought medical care in Stockholm, is believed to have been infected during a stay in the affected region of Africa.

Swedish health officials have assured the public that the risk to the general population remains very low, despite this imported case. The patient has been treated and given appropriate guidelines to follow. However, experts warn that occasional imported cases may continue to occur.

This new strain of mpox, which can be fatal in up to 10% of cases, has raised concerns among scientists due to its potential for easier transmission. The outbreak has predominantly affected Congo, accounting for over 96% of all cases and deaths across Africa this year. The WHO reports more than 14,000 cases and 524 deaths across a dozen African countries, surpassing last year’s figures.

While rich countries like Sweden have resources to quickly contain such outbreaks, the situation highlights the ongoing global health challenges posed by emerging infectious diseases. The case underscores the importance of international cooperation and vigilance in monitoring and responding to potential threats.

As health authorities worldwide remain on alert, this incident serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness of global health and the need for robust surveillance and response systems to address emerging infectious diseases promptly.
