Morocco targets additional 6.5GW renewable energy capacity by 2027
Morocco is planning to boost its renewable energy capacity to 11GW by adding 6.5GW over the next four years, energy minister Leila Benali said.
The country has a total capacity of 11GW and plans to almost double that to 20GW as it also invests in gas and green hydrogen, the minister said in Rabat, cited by Reuters.
Currently, renewable energy represents 40% of the energy mix, with plans to bolster that share to 52% before 2030.
Besides renewables, Morocco aims to increase the share of gas in its energy transition by investing in LNG terminals, ports, and pipelines.
It has picked Nador’s port to build an LNG infrastructure and a pipeline to connect it with the Maghreb-Europe pipeline.
Meanwhile, the country started producing gas at a small scale in offshore fields in the north-west and onshore fields in eastern Morocco.
She said Morocco is well-positioned to lead the energy transition thanks to its regulatory framework and investments to develop the grid.
Morocco plans to connect Dakhla, in the southern provinces, to Casablanca through a 3GW electricity connection.
