Sudan: Egyptian embassy staff member killed in fighting
Mohamad El-Gharawi, a staff member of the Egyptian embassy in Khartoum was killed in the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, the Egyptian Foreign ministry announced this Monday.
Gharawi was slain on the way from his residence to the embassy headquarters to follow up on evacuation procedures for Egyptians in Sudan.
He is the second staff member of the mission to have suffered consequence of the confrontation between the Sudanese factions. Last Sunday, the ministry announced that another staff member sustained injury. The department did not provide further details.
Egypt, like several other countries, is evacuating its citizens from Sudan as the fighting has entered the second week. At least 10,000 Egyptians, including 5,000 students, are in Sudan.
Authorities have so far evacuated at least 904 of them.
