DRC: Moïse Katumbi unveils plans to run for 2023 Presidential elections

Moïse Katumbi, former governor of Katagan province and ally of incumbent President of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Félix Tshisekedi, has announced plans to run for next year presidential elections as he criticizes Tshisekedi’s record.

“I am candidate,” he told French media France24 and RFI.

The leader of Ensemble pour la République party also announced his break-away from Tshisekedi’s ruling alliance Union Sacrée.

“I have to save a nation in danger,” he said.

According to him, the country is in chaotic situation. He said he has a vision to rebuild the army and the security of the country.
DRC has been grappling with insecurity in the East caused by rebels’ groups including M23 allegedly backed by Rwanda.

The businessman turned politician also laid into his former ally that he accuses of decreeing a siege which he argued has created misfortune and more problems in North Kivu and Ituri provinces since May 2021.

DRC independent election body CENI has announced general elections for next year. The presidential poll is slated for December 20 as are the legislative, provincial and local elections.

Katumbi was barred from running for 2018 elections by the regime of former leader Joseph Kabila. He then backed Martin Fayulu who lost to Tshisekedi.
