Jewish Memory Museum inaugurated in Tangier
The Bet Yehudah Jewish memory museum in the Medina of Tangier was inaugurated on Friday, after completion of the rehabilitation of the Assayag Synagogue, which required a total budget of MAD 2 million.
The “Beit Yehouda” museum, meant to preserve and promote the cultural heritage specific to the Judaism of Megorachim, established in the northern area of the Kingdom, extends over 260 m2. It houses 3 exhibition halls, passageways around the patio of the synagogue and a souvenir shop.
There are also plans to create a study and research center dedicated to Judaism in northern Morocco.
The Assayag Synagogue has been refurbished as part of the rehabilitation and enhancement program of the Medina of Tangier, which focused on restoring all places of worship bearing a strong civilizational significance.
Under the program, the synagogue, which had been abandoned for more than 60 years and which was in danger of collapsing at any moment, has been reconstructed while fully respecting its century-old components.
The inauguration of this Jewish Museum space in Tangier is part of the second phase program for the rehabilitation of cultural heritage presented in 2018 by the Council of Jewish Communities of Morocco, which benefited from the high patronage of King Mohammed VI.
