Dakhla Proclaimed 2022 City of Peace and Tolerance

The city of Dakhla has been proclaimed city of peace and tolerance in 2022.

The announcement was made by president of the Global Council for Tolerance and Peace (GCTP), Ahmad Bin Mohammed Al-Jarwan, during the 10th International Parliament for Tolerance and Peace, held in the Moroccan cities of Rabat and Dakhla.

Al-Jarwan said that the holding in Dakhla of this event comes to emphasize the need for joint international action and parliamentary cooperation at different levels, with a view to promoting the culture of tolerance, peace, friendship, brotherhood and peaceful coexistence in different communities around the world. Meeting the basic needs of all the peoples of the world is a prerequisite for stability, development and peace, he said.

He also called on the Global Parliament for Tolerance and Peace to urgently form a team of MPs tasked with coming up with recommendations on global food security. The team is called upon to establish communication links with the institutions of the international community to ensure the needs of countries most impacted by political and economic crises.

Al-Jarwan also highlighted the role of international organizations, educational institutions and peace lovers in the world in enshrining the noble humanitarian goals, noting that time is ripe to unify the efforts of these bodies, with a view to entrench the culture of tolerance and peace in the programs of these organizations and educational programs around the world.

Furthermore, he noted that the Master in Tolerance and Peace, launched by the General Assembly of the Council, is of particular importance since it will contribute to establishing a safer and more tolerant future for current and future generations.

President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Duarte Pacheco, who took part in the event said Morocco is “a bright model for the promotion of peace and tolerance, not only for African and Arab countries but for the whole world.”

Pacheco noted that “the Global Council has been successful in choosing the venue of this meeting, namely the Kingdom of Morocco, a country of democracy and a land of peace and respect for the other.”

He stated further that dialogue remains the only way to resolve disputes in our world, and “if we aspire to a secure world in which every individual and every country live in peace … we must realize that tolerance and mutual respect are essential.”

Regarding the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, he said it started as a regional dispute and then turned into a global conflict with disastrous effects on food and energy supplies and soaring inflation rates in major economies.

Food for all is a very important issue to maintain peace and respect in our world, Pacheco observed, adding that parliamentarians have a special responsibility in promoting dialogue between countries, and mutual respect.

The International Parliament for Tolerance and Peace is one of the most important international parliaments specialized in spreading the values of tolerance and peace.

It discusses issues referred to it by the General Assembly and the Presidium. It also examines international developments related to tolerance and peace and makes appropriate recommendations.

It is one of the bodies of the Global Council for Tolerance and Peace (CGTP), which is an international organization that enshrines and disseminates the noble values of tolerance and peace among peoples and states according to the principles of the United Nations.

The GCTP convenes its international parliament once every quarter and can hold an extraordinary session if necessary. It works to spread the culture of tolerance and aims, among other things, to combat discrimination, racism, intolerance and religious, ethnic and sectarian extremism and to develop the rules of international law promoting the principles of tolerance for peace.
