Eastern Caribbean States open consulate in Moroccan Sahara

The organization of Eastern Caribbean States OECS opened their consulate in Dakhla in the Moroccan Sahara, in a tangible support for Moroccan territorial integrity and sovereignty.

The new consulate will join similar diplomatic missions in Dakhla and Laayoune opened by 24 countries.

The opening of this new consulate mirrors the growing support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, said Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita following the inauguration of the consulate by Prime Minister of Dominican Republic Roosevelt Skerrit.

“The advantage of this consulate is that it does not only represent a single country, but six member states of the OECS.”

During this visit Skerrit reiterated his country’s position in support of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and backed the autonomy initiative as the unique basis for a political solution to this regional conflict.

The opening of this consulates came as Morocco’s autonomy plan gains traction within the international community after similar positions by Spain and Israel which recently joined the US, France, Germany as well as African and Arab countries.
