Benghazi, Misrata resume commercial flights after seven-year hiatus
Libya’s national carrier, Afriqiyah Airways, operated Tuesday a commercial flight between the eastern city of Benghazi and Misrata (West) for the first time since 2014 in a sign of reconciliation.
The airline announced the resumption of flights between the two cities in a statement, saying it will operate two weekly flights between Benghazi and Misrata.
Misrata, controlled by powerful military groups backed the Government of National Accord (GNA), rejected by Benghazi-based retired Gen. Khalifa Haftar.
The oil-rich African country slid into chaos following the assassination in October 2011 of former leader Muammar Gaddafi.
The UN last month managed to broker the election of an interim government expected to lead affairs until general elections are held late December this year.
