Morocco to achieve herd immunity within 5 months- Health Minister

Morocco is poised to reach herd immunity in three to five months which would enable a restoration of normalcy, health minister said.

His statement comes after Morocco received a new batch of 4 million AstraZeneca doses enabling the ministry to extend the vaccination to people over 65 years old.

Morocco had received last month two million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine and 500,000 of Sinopharm doses, which helped the country launch Africa’s first vaccination campaign.

Morocco plans to inoculate 30 million people, or 80% of its population in order to unlock the economy and lift all travel restrictions.

Morocco has extended a health emergency decree until March 10 and maintained night curfew until mid-February.

In Africa, Morocco has the largest vaccinated population standing at 1.4 million.

By February 14, Morocco had registered 478,135 coronavirus infections, including 458,504 recoveries and 8460 deaths.
