Morocco & US host regional meeting to bolster cooperation against nuclear proliferation & WMDs

Morocco and the United States opened this Tuesday a virtual regional meeting to look into ways of enhancing cooperation to counter nuclear proliferation and weapons of mass destruction (WMDs).

The four-day meeting is part of the activities of the US-Morocco working group on security issues addressed within the frame of the Strategic Dialogue set between the two countries.

This regional gathering, which comes amid a growing cross-border security threats, features round tables moderated by international experts on the good practices and experience sharing in the implementation of international sanctions in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions.

Delegates from Tunisia and Libya are participating remotely in this meeting organized in collaboration with the US Stimson Center.

Representatives from several Moroccan ministerial departments, security agencies, the military and central bank are also taking part in the meeting.

In his opening address, Redouane Houssaini, a senior foreign affairs official said the centuries-old Moroccan-American friendship and cooperation are based on a multifaceted strategic partnership and close coordination at multilateral forums, in particular the UN to serve regional and international peace and stability.

For his part, David Greene, Chargé d’Affaires of the US embassy in Rabat has commended Morocco’s efforts in the fight against nuclear proliferation and weapons of mass destruction, noting that Morocco has succeeded in striking a balance between the security requirements and the need for freedom of trade.

The United States remains committed to supporting efforts destined to strengthen regional cooperation in the fight against nuclear proliferation and weapons of mass destruction, said the US diplomat.
