Arab Summit Voices Unanimous Support for Morocco’s 2026 World Cup Bid
The 29th Arab Summit held in the Saudi eastern city of Dhahran Sunday has affirmed unanimous support for Morocco’s bid to host the 2026 football World Cup.
The announcement was made by Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita who was part of the Moroccan delegation to the Summit.
King Mohammed VI was represented at the summit by Prince Moulay Rachid.
“The (Arab) summit has unanimously affirmed its support for Morocco’s bid to organize the 2026 World Cup tournament and called upon all Arab States to provide full and unfailing support for this candidacy,” Bourita told the media at the end of the Arab Summit.
Morocco, which is making its fifth bid to host a World Cup football tournament, has as rival the joint bid of the US, Mexico and Canada.
In order to win, the North African nation will need to convince the 207 member associations in FIFA of its capabilities and assets in the face of the joint North American bid.
So far, Morocco has secured the backing of the bulk of the members of the African football federation, France, Luxembourg, Belgium, Russia, Serbia and after the support of Arab States, Muslim countries are also expected to vote for Morocco.
Morocco has announced that it will earmark $15.8 billion on stadiums and infrastructure if it wins the bid
