Record 107 women elected to Morocco’s parliament as direct wins triple

A total of 107 women are set to sit in Morocco’s House of Representatives following the 2026 legislative elections, according to provisional results.

The figure marks a further advance in women’s political representation and reflects both the continued effectiveness of institutional quotas and a growing ability of female candidates to win seats in open competition.

Of the 107 elected women, 90 secured their seats through the reserved quota mechanism, while 17 were elected directly in local constituencies after competing against male candidates.

This represents a significant increase from the previous elections in 2021, when only six women won seats in the local constituencies.

The rise in directly elected women- from six to 17- is viewed as particularly meaningful.

While the quota system continues to guarantee a minimum level of female presence in parliament, the increase in open-seat victories points to a gradual shift toward greater competitiveness of women in standard electoral races.

In the 2026 elections, 2,658 women stood as candidates, including 1,783 in local constituencies and 875 under the reserved mechanism.

The number of women running in local constituencies more than doubled compared with 2021, when there were 1,216 such candidates.

Although the 17 women elected outside the quota system still form a minority of the total female contingent, their near-tripling in five years is seen as evidence of a progressive strengthening of women’s political anchoring at the territorial level.
