Morocco’s Sothema Accelerates Its Pan-African Expansion

Moroccan pharmaceutical group Sothema is accelerating its pan-African expansion, buoyed by record financial results and a historic first half, as the company reshapes its industrial model, according to Jeune Afrique. In half a century of existence, the flagship of Morocco’s pharmaceutical industry has never posted such strong performance, closing a record year with 3.5 billion dirhams in revenue and net income attributable to the group up 21 percent, before continuing that momentum with first-half revenue reaching 1.8 billion dirhams, up 16 percent.

The company’s growth is accompanied by targeted strategic moves, including the acquisition of hemodialysis specialist Soludia and the launch of Sothema International, a structure dedicated to the company’s global reach. The goal is to evolve the traditional model into a more diversified, better vertically integrated group resolutely turned toward external markets.

The company, founded in 1976, has become a key player whose products, ranging from insulin to injectable treatments, serums and ophthalmic solutions, are now distributed in 37 countries, mainly across Africa and the Middle East, backed by nine specialized industrial units and a reputation reinforced by its role in vaccine production and packaging during the pandemic.

The operators attribute the company’s success to a method built on ambition, execution discipline and social responsibility, combining the drive to broaden its industrial footprint with the need to quickly translate strategic direction into operational results, while maintaining high standards of safety, quality and patient access to care. Sub-Saharan Africa sits at the center of this external growth strategy, envisioned not as a simple export market but as the natural extension of the company’s original industrial project. Through its Senegalese subsidiary West Afric Pharma, which serves as a hub for West Africa, Sothema is working to build new regional platforms adapted to each country’s regulatory and economic specifics, aiming to support the continent’s health sovereignty and reduce its dependence on drug imports, Jeune Afrique stated
