2026 World Cup: Morocco Defeat Scotland, Make Major Step Toward the Next Round of 16

The Moroccan national team secured a valuable 1-0 victory over Scotland on Friday evening at Boston Stadium in Foxborough, United States, in their second Group C match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Atlas Lions made a strong start, with Ismael Saibari finding the back of the net in just the second minute of the game. His strike was the only goal of the match and entered the record books as the fastest goal ever scored by an Arab team at a FIFA World Cup, the second-fastest by an African nation in World Cup history, and the fastest goal of the 2026 tournament so far.

Ismael Saibari has thus confirmed his immense potential by establishing himself at the highest level, and his versatility as he is capable of playing in several midfield and attacking positions. He also showed a standout performance in Morocco’s opening match against Brazil national team, during which he scored the Moroccan team’s goal and played a decisive role throughout the game.

Morocco dominated much of the match against Scotland and came close to doubling their lead early in the second half when Saibari’s effort struck the crossbar in the 50th minute. Two minutes later, Scottish goalkeeper Angus Gunn produced an excellent save to deny Neil El Aynaoui’s powerful header.

Achraf Hakimi and his teammates continued to press forward, with the Moroccan captain posing a constant threat. In the 62nd minute, he delivered a dangerous set-piece cross before sending a powerful shot narrowly wide of the post. Brahim Diaz nearly sealed the victory in the 77th minute but failed to capitalize on a one-on-one opportunity after hesitating before shooting.

Scotland increased the pressure in the closing stages and threatened Yassine Bounou’s goal on several occasions. Ryan Christie’s long-range effort sailed over the crossbar, while Scotland had two penalty appeals waved away following challenges involving Neil El Aynaoui inside the box. Substitute Lyndon Dykes also came close with a header that went wide in the 85th minute.

The match featured several tactical and injury-related substitutions, notably the departure of Kieran Tierney due to injury for Scotland. Morocco head coach brought on Soufiane Rahimi, Chamseddine Talbi, and Ayoub Amamouni-Ishgouiab in the closing minutes to help preserve the lead.

Morocco successfully held on until the final whistle, securing an important victory that significantly boosted their chances of reaching the Round of 16. The Atlas Lions combined defensive discipline with attacking efficiency against a Scottish side that failed to make the most of its opportunities.
