In 2025, Morocco increased avocado exports by 90% to 141,000 tons, becoming Africa’s leading avocado exporter for the first time, says a report issued by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
This surge allowed the North African country to overtake Kenya and South Africa in avocado exports following several years of successful investment in production expansion.
According to FAO’s Tropical Fruits Market Review, Morocco’s avocado exports increase comes after a 40-percent expansion in harvested area from 2022 to 2024, accompanied by a 17-percent increase in output and 34-percent rise in exports.
Preliminary data for the first nine months of 2025 showed that some 90 percent of avocado shipments from Morocco were destined for European Union markets over this period, where avocados continued to be popular.
In 2025, African countries exported a total of 430,432 tons of avocados. The volume increased 16.67% from 368,845 tons recorded a year earlier.
Kenya, South Africa, and Morocco together accounted for more than 75% of Africa’s annual avocado shipments.
Last year, Morocco emerged as a leading avocado exporter Africa, while its Kenya and South Africa were hit by logistics constraints, resulting in major decline in shipments.
