Morocco’s Safi Flash Flood: King Mohammed VI Orders Emergency Assistance & Rehabilitation Program

King Mohammed VI has ordered the rapid deployment of an emergency assistance and rehabilitation program in Moroccan Atlantic coastal city of Safi hit by a deadly flash flood caused by torrential rains.
In a press release issued Thursday, the Head of Government’s department said the emergency program, which has been launched upon the Royal instructions, demonstrates the Sovereign’s constant care for citizens in various circumstances, and providing them all forms of support and assistance, especially those stricken by natural disasters.
The government program, part of a comprehensive approach, aims to rehabilitate the areas hit by the exceptional floods that struck Safi on December 14, 2025, following the unprecedented torrential rain that has caused human losses and material damage to infrastructure and essential equipment across several neighborhoods.
The program includes a set of measures to ensure a rapid and efficient intervention, as well as immediate response to the affected populations’ needs to alleviate the impact of the catastrophe.
It provides for emergency aid to families who lost personal belongings and measures to restore damaged houses, as well as the reconstruction, repair and renovation of the damaged commercial buildings, with support extended to owners. These efforts aim at preserving the citizens’ dignity, ensuring decent living conditions and strengthening resilience, says the Govt.’s press release.
Furthermore, in accordance with the Royal Guidelines, important human and logistical resources have been mobilized, while strengthening coordination among the relevant stakeholders.
“All necessary human and logistical resources have been mobilized,” the press release said, emphasizing reinforced coordination among local authorities and agencies to ensure swift and effective implementation.
Authorities have been instructed to begin executing the measures without delay to meet urgent needs and guarantee proper follow-up.
The floods, which struck several neighborhoods in Safi, left behind significant destruction, highlighting vulnerabilities in urban infrastructure. The government stressed that the response will be progressive but immediate, in line with royal instructions to prioritize the welfare of affected citizens.
In parallel, Morocco has rolled out emergency assistance to counter a severe cold wave sweeping several regions, providing heating equipment, blankets, and food supplies to vulnerable populations.
The government said these efforts are part of a broader strategy to protect citizens from extreme winter conditions while responding to the Safi disaster.
