UN Envoy hails UN Resolution as culmination of Morocco’s 50-year diplomatic effort

Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Omar Hilale, described the recent UN Security Council resolution on the Sahara as a historic milestone crowning 50 years of efforts in defense of the Kingdom’s territorial integrity and national unity.

In a televised interview with Rita Cosby on Newsmax’s “Saturday Report,” Hilale praised US President Donald Trump for his pivotal role in recognizing Morocco’s sovereignty over the region.

“This is a moment of unity,” Hilale said, adding that the resolution affirms Morocco’s legitimate and historical ties to the Sahara.

Hilale also highlighted the text as an achievement to five decades of diplomatic effort, patience, and the enduring loyalty of Saharan populations to the Alaouite monarchy.

Immediately after the resolution was passed, the King gave a speech marking the event as a turning point, followed the same night by public celebrations, with Moroccans taking to the streets in a show of national pride.

The ambassador paid tribute to Trump’s 2020 recognition of Moroccan sovereignty, calling it a watershed that ended the diplomatic stalemate at the UN and catalyzed a new regional dynamic.

“History will remember President Trump as the first leader of a major power to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara,” he said.

Hilale drew a symbolic parallel between Morocco’s early recognition of US independence over two centuries ago and Washington’s recent support for Morocco’s territorial integrity.

He added that this move has encouraged European powers, including France, the UK, and Germany, to back Morocco’s autonomy plan as the only viable solution to the regional dispute.

Looking ahead, Hilale expressed hope for regional reconciliation and economic integration, stating. “We hope President Trump will visit the Sahara, and that next year we will celebrate reconciliation with our neighbors.”

He deplored the lack of regional unity in the Maghreb, describing it as “the least integrated region in the world” due to the ongoing conflict, while reaffirming King Mohammed VI’s commitment to a strategy of patience, outreach, and firm defense of national sovereignty.
