Morocco secures seat on International Civil Aviation Organization Council

Morocco has been elected to the International Civil Aviation Organization Council during the 42nd session of the United Nations aviation body in Montreal. The kingdom’s selection demonstrates international confidence in Morocco’s aviation sector development and commitment to global civil aviation standards.

“The kingdom’s brilliant election to the ICAO Council illustrates Morocco’s strong reputation and international confidence,” stated Moroccan Ambassador to Canada Souriya Otmani following the vote. The diplomat emphasized that under King Mohammed VI’s leadership, civil aviation has become a national priority with significant progress achieved in safety, security, air services, and sustainable development aligned with international standards and norms.

Morocco’s election results from active participation and engagement by the Moroccan delegation led by Transport and Logistics Minister Abdessamad Kayouh. The delegation conducted multiple bilateral meetings with civil aviation officials from other countries during the assembly, strengthening Morocco’s international aviation relationships.

The ICAO Assembly convenes at least once every three years, summoned by the organization’s executive body, the Council. All 193 ICAO member states along with numerous international organizations participate in this event, which establishes the organization’s global policy for the following three years.

Morocco’s Council membership positions the kingdom to influence international civil aviation policy development while contributing expertise gained through recent aviation sector expansion. The country’s modern airport infrastructure, including major facilities in Casablanca, Marrakech, and Tangier, demonstrates commitment to meeting global aviation standards.

The selection reflects Morocco’s growing influence in international aviation governance, building on strategic positioning as a regional hub connecting Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Council membership enables direct participation in establishing technical standards, recommended practices, and aviation policy frameworks affecting global air transport operations.
