Morocco calls from Algiers for respect of states’ sovereignty, territorial integrity

Morocco has called, from Algiers, for the respect of states’ sovereignty and territorial integrity and for a joint Arab action, based on this principle.

The call was launched by the Moroccan delegation taking part in the 38th Congress of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (AIPU), held May 2-4 in the Algerian capital on the theme “The Role of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union in Light of Regional and International Developments.”

In an address, read out on his behalf, the First Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mohamed Sabbari, called for the “elaboration of a realistic, shared vision that breaks with divisive rhetoric and lays the foundations for a new phase of joint Arab action based on respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.”

Sabbari said that this vision must be based on promoting the spirit of solidarity and understanding between Arab peoples, according to a press release from the Parliament.

In this respect, he noted that the theme of this conclave goes beyond the organizational framework of the Union to cover strategic topics and current challenges facing the Arab region and the world as a whole, thus testing “the effectiveness of the AIPU as a platform for making the voice of Arab peoples heard.”

Sabbari highlighted the vital role played by the AIPU since its inception in 1974 in bringing the Arab world closer together and creating a space conducive to dialogue and the convergence of viewpoints and wills, in addition to its contribution to the formation of a democratic Arab parliamentary culture based on communication and cooperation between the various national parliaments.

He also praised the Union’s role in coordinating efforts and unifying positions in international parliamentary forums, as well as its support for the spirit of fraternity and joint action, calling for the development of its action mechanisms so that they are consistent with the new Arab discourse in phase with the major geostrategic transformations the world is undergoing, with a view to preserving the interests of the Arab Ummah and the independence of its collective decision.”

Touching on the latest developments in the region, Sabbari who pointed out that the Palestinian cause remains the most salient challenge on the Arab agenda, condemned the ongoing Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people in Gaza and the West Bank.

In this respect, he stressed the need to put an immediate end to the aggression, lift the siege, open the crossing points and allow the Palestinian people to exercise their fundamental rights.

In this vein, he recalled the unwavering support of King Mohammed VI, Chairman of the al-Quds Committee, to the Palestinians, through the humanitarian and field actions carried out by Bayt Mal al-Quds Asharif Agency, which, he said, “enshrines the commitment of Morocco, King and people, to the Palestinian cause.”
