New document shows involvement of Bashar’s Syria in training Polisario fighters
Moroccan media, Le360, has released a new proof showing the connivance between Algeria and the fallen Syrian regime of Bashar Assad in providing training to the Polisario front.
The new document by the Syrian intelligence shows an agreement between the Algerian and Syrian defense ministries to send 120 Polisario fighters to be trained in Syria, where Iranian proxies are active.
Media reports, including by the Washington Post, have revealed that a number of Polisario fighters have been jailed by the new Syrian authorities for fighting alongside Bashar and Iranian proxies.
This came as calls have stepped up for the designation of the Polisario as a terrorist group, in view of its close military cooperation with Iranian proxies such as Hezbollah. Morocco had cut ties with Iran in 2018 accusing it of using its Hezbollah offshoot to train and provide armament to the Polisario.
A Polisario leader has publicly said the group has Iran-made drones.
Algeria remained a staunch backer of the Bashar’s regime till its collapse.
The Polisario’s links to Sahel terror groups, its targeting of civilians, and violation of the UN ceasefire agreement has motivated western Think tanks such as FDD and the Hudson Institute, as well as Congressmen in the USA and members of the political class in the UK and France to call for designating the Algeria-backed separatist group as terrorist.
