Sudanese Army reports major victory over RSF in Southern Sudan

Fierce battles broke out on Tuesday April 1 between the Sudanese army and the rival paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), in El-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan state in southern Sudan. Military sources reported that the army inflicted significant losses on the RSF, targeting their troops and equipment, which forced the RSF forces to retreat from key positions in the city.

Clashes, involving heavy artillery, began early in the morning in the western parts of El-Obeid, with residents witnessing intense fighting. However, the situation calmed later in the day, though the RSF has yet to comment on the army’s claims of victory. The army’s actions follow a series of territorial gains across Sudan in recent weeks, including the recapture of major sites like Khartoum’s airport and security headquarters.

The ongoing conflict, which has raged since April 2023, has resulted in over 20,000 deaths and displaced millions. International organizations, including the UN, have expressed grave concerns over the humanitarian crisis, with fears of famine and widespread suffering. As the army continues to gain ground, the RSF’s territorial control is rapidly diminishing across Sudan.
