Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety Adopts Marrakech Declaration

Participants in the 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety adopted the Marrakech Declaration on Thursday—an ambitious roadmap designed to enhance global commitment to safer, more accessible roads for all.

The Declaration reaffirms key principles to uphold, including strong leadership and accountability, sustainable funding, innovation and technology, and cross-sector collaboration.

It also highlights the challenges faced by different regions, ensuring that no country is left behind in the collective effort to reduce road fatalities and injuries.

Among the key measures outlined in the Marrakech Declaration are accelerating the implementation of the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030, strengthening national and international commitments, and ensuring sustainable and integrated road safety financing.

The Declaration commended “Morocco’s leadership in road safety,” expressing deep appreciation of King Mohammed VI’s decision to launch the prestigious Mohammed VI International Prize for Road Safety.

The signatories of the Declaration called for investment in safer infrastructure and the promotion of safe systems, technology, and sustainable mobility.

The Declaration also stresses the need to intensify global cooperation and capacity building, particularly in low-income countries, with a special focus on Africa.

Participants invited the United Nations General Assembly to adopt a resolution promoting the Marrakech Declaration and urged the WHO to monitor the progress made under the commitments of this Global Ministerial Conference.
