AFCON 2025 : Opening match to oppose host Morocco to Comoros

The 2025 TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations will kick off in Morocco on Sunday, December 21, with the hosts facing Comoros in the opening match of Group A. This exciting clash, alongside the rest of the group stage fixtures, was confirmed during the Final Draw held in Rabat on January 27. Morocco, eager to end a 49-year AFCON trophy drought, will be hoping to make a strong start under the guidance of coach Walid Regragui, who led the team to the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The Atlas Lions, making their 20th AFCON appearance, are considered one of the tournament’s favorites but have not won the continental title since 1976. Despite reaching the semi-finals in 2004, Morocco will be aiming to build on their recent successes and secure a victory in their opening match against Comoros. The Coelacanths, in their second AFCON appearance, will be looking to make a strong statement after a notable performance in the 2021 tournament, where they reached the Round of 16.

In addition to Morocco and Comoros, Group A also includes Mali and Zambia, promising a competitive group stage. The full tournament draw also sees Egypt, South Africa, Angola, and Zimbabwe in Group B; Nigeria, Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania in Group C; while Senegal, DR Congo, Benin, and Botswana make up Group D. Groups E and F feature Algeria, Burkina Faso, Equatorial Guinea, and Sudan, as well as Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, Gabon, and Mozambique, respectively.
