Libya: UN Envoy holds talks with MPs in Benghazi to break political deadlock

The Acting UN Special Envoy to Libya, Stephanie Koury, visited on January 20 the House of Representatives headquarters in Benghazi, where she met with several Libyan Members of Parliament to discuss the political process.

Mrs Koury outlined the United Nations Support Mission in Libya’s (UNSMIL) efforts to break the ongoing political deadlock, facilitate elections, and restore unity and legitimacy to Libyan institutions.

The MPs shared their views on the obstacles to holding elections, the need for political and security unification, and the importance of implementing economic reforms.

The discussions also focused on creating a consensual framework for national reconciliation. Koury highlighted that the MPs expressed a willingness to work constructively with UNSMIL to reach an agreement on the draft National Reconciliation Law, which aims to foster cooperation and address the country’s divisions.
