Algeria boycotts Ecuador’s bananas after its pro-Morocco move
The prices of bananas are set to surge in Algeria after the latter boycotted imports of the fruit from its main supplier Ecuador, which has withdrawn recognition of the Polisario entity and backed Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Sahara.
Ecuador has made the position last month, following the example of Panama, showing strong support for the autonomy plan under Morocco’s sovereignty as a final solution to the Sahara issue.
The decision is part of similar self-harming moves taken by Algeria in retaliation from sovereign countries that back Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara.
The Algerian economic measure will harm Algerian citizens who have been struggling with double digit inflation due to the government’s restriction of foodstuff imports, including bananas.
The measure also shows the extent to which Algeria is ready to self-harm in pursuit of the Polisario’s separatist chimera in the Sahara territory. In retaliating against states taking sovereign diplomatic stands in support of Morocco’s rule over the Sahara, Algeria shows that it is in fact the genuine party to the Sahara conflict.
However, Algeria finds itself incapable of taking such a measure against giants such as the US or France which have recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara.
In recent months, three states withdrew recognition of the Algeria-hosted Polisario entity, namely Panama, Ecuador and Ghana.
