Launch of Arab Common Electricity Market
The 15th session of the Arab Ministerial Council for Electricity held in Cairo highlighted by the formal launch of the Arab Common Electricity Market. The event was attended by electricity ministers and representatives from various Arab nations.
Assistant Secretary-General for the Economic Sector, Ali Al-Maliki, delivering remarks on behalf of the Arab League, hailed the launch as a “historic event” that underscores the depth of Arab cooperation in the electricity sector.
Al-Maliki described the initiative as a transformative step, enhancing the stability of electricity supplies, reducing costs, and fostering investments in renewable energy. He emphasized that the market positions Arab countries as a significant global source of clean energy and lays the groundwork for stronger economic cooperation, integration, and sustainable development in the region.
The agreement to establish the market was signed by 11 countries, including Egypt, Kuwait, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, UAE, and Yemen.
The launch represents a unified Arab vision to strengthen energy collaboration and optimize shared capabilities in electricity production and exchange, ultimately serving the interests of the Arab people.
During the session, Morocco was elected a member of the new Executive Bureau of the Council of Arab Ministers of Electricity for the 2024-2026 term.
